REVERSE PARKING info

How to do a REVERSE PARK - please take it slowly, use your spatial awareness

1. As you're approaching a parked car, look to see how close or far it is from the kerb, and if it's straight (parallel) with the kerb or not.

Check your mirrors, and apply your left indicator as you slow down.

2. Stop beside the the parked car, leaving 1.3 metres space between both cars.

Select reverse gear, then make a reversing head check (a quick look over your left shoulder out the back window).

Reverse slowly, when your front window lines up with the parked car's rear wheel (or has passed behind the rear window), turn the steering wheel left to full lock until the car turns to a 45 degree angle.

Straighten the steering wheel (not the car) and keep reversing back on that 45 degree angle.

Look at your left side mirror, when that passes the parked car's right side rear lights then turn the steering wheel to full lock right to bring the car parallel with the kerb and behind the parked car.

Remember at the beginning when I asked you to look at the other car's position, well keep that in mind as you use that car to help you check your position.

You can reverse up to 7 meters back from the car in front. When reversing, this is the best time to get that rear left wheel as close to the gutter as possible.

3. As you move forward keep in mind that you should be between 1 to 2 meters from the car in front and less than 30CM from the kerb.

4. If at this point you are still not in the correct position, then you have another reverse and forward maneuver available.

When finished, make the car safe by applying the parking brake and putting the gear shift in the "P" position (neutral for manual).

STEP BY STEP BASICS:

Pull up parallel with a car.

Reverse back straight.

When your passenger window passes the rear window of the parked car, turn the steering wheel to full lock left.

Once the car has moved to a 45 degree angle, straighten the steering wheel.

When your left mirror passes the parked car's rear right lights, turn the steering wheel full lock right.

As you move in behind the parked car, straighten up as needed.
